Larry Wakefield

Larry Wakefield, Vice President & General Manager of Modcom Corporation – 1966-78

Larry Wakefield came to KATI in 1966 from Sheridan, Wyoming, to be the very first host of the famous “CY Strip Show”. The show ran every weeknight from 8-midnight and Larry played the hits for all of Casper’s teenagers driving the nightly path on CY Avenue.

Larry went on to be General Manager of Mod-com from the late 60’s all through the 70’s. Larry left Wyoming to be a very successful real estate broker and agent in Kalispell, Montana, where he resides today.

Larry Wakefield started at KATI in 1966 and was hired specifically to be the announcer on the brand new night-time CY Strip Show. He came to Casper from Sheridan where he had worked at KROE with his brother Bob and his twin sister Mary.  At one point it was a Wakefield day on the air at KROE, Sheridan, as Larry would sign-on the station and work until noon.  His sister Mary would work afternoons and his older brother Bob would close out the day and sign the station off.

Larry started out as a night-time jock but it wasn’t long as he was promoted to Station Manager of KAWY, the new Stereo FM in the state, and in 1969 General Manger when Bill Sims left for his own station ownership in Cody.  Larry ended up as one of the longest term employees and friends of Pat and Shirley Meenan and KATI.

While Larry was at KATI, he did the morning show on KATI, sports play by play for both Casper High Schools & Casper College, produced award winning commercials, hosted “Free For All”, the morning discussion program for years, followed and broadcast the “Casper Troopers” for two years as they competed for national drum corp honors all across the country, and during a lot of the time was General Manager as well .

Larry presided over the madness at the Big-14 until 1978.

Larry went on to own his own radio station cluster in Anaconda, Montana for nearly three years before selling them and going into real estate.   Currently Larry owned a very successful Real Estate Brokerage called “Properties Northwest” in Kalispell, the Flathead valley of Montana, where he still resides today. Larry has probably sold more land and houses in Kalispell, Montana, than anyone else there in years.
