Ken Prather

Announcer 1956-1962   Ken Prather  was one of the inaugural employees at KATI beginning in 1956 when the station signed on.  In addition to announcing duties he was also an advertising salesman at the station.  He later became a majority owner, along with his wife Misha, in KATI.
Ken Prather came to Casper in 1946, following World War Two, where he earned the rank of Captain.  He was hired by the Casper Junior Chamber of Commerce to be a Military Affairs Adviser for the Veterans Assistance Center here in Casper. He helped returning veterans with issues or problems returning to civilian life.  Prior to taking this position, Prather had done a similar job at Fort Dix in New Jersey..  It’s unknown how long he remained at this position as he later became an announcer and ad salesman for Casper Radio Station KSPR.

He apparently worked with Don Hathaway’s radio and television operation until 1956, when he joined Jack Breece and his newly licensed radio station called KATI.  In a newspaper article from 1956, Prather is listed as one of the inaugural announcers for the station when it signed on the air on May 4, 1956.  Ken Prather, his wife, Misha Prather and a third buyer, Pathrick H.. Meenan, bought KATI radio in 1957.  The Prather’s, as majority owners of KATI, continued to operate the facility until 1961 when they sold the station to Meenan outright. They went to Boulder, Colorado, to start another station there (KDEY-AM), also called Katy, that went on the air in 1962-63.

Ken’s Theme song was a Henry Mancini piece called “Timothy.” A video of the song is shown below.
